'Overboard' @ Tysons Corner Center

Andy Yoder, our friend and former associate, continues to dazzle and amaze with his exhibit ‘Overboard’. See it's most iteration at Tyson's Corner Center featuring featuring 230 hand-crafted Nike Air Jordan 5 sneakers.

The exhibition is inspired by “The Great Shoe Spill of 1990.” In May 1990 five shipping containers holding 80,000 Nike sneakers went overboard in the North Pacific. The shoes eventually washed ashore littering the US northwest coastline. To bring attention to today’s culture of consumerism Andy crafted Nike Air Jordan 5 sneakers from reclaimed materials taken from recycling bins.

This exhibit is sponsored by Tysons Corner Management, along with support from ArtsFairfax and the Julie Collins Smith Museum. They pulled out all of the stops for this great presentation, which will remain on view through mid-January. If you’ve missed the previous showings, this a great chance to see this incredible work!

Andy Yoder’s exhibition is no longer post-poned! Overboard opens on Earth Day, April 22nd. Head on over to the Sandlot Southeast, right across from Nationals Park Stadium, to see the amazing shoe sculptures. The exhibition runs through June 27th.

Featured Artist - Andy Yoder

Andy Yoder has worked at Archival Art Services designing framing for more than 5 years. Beyond his work with us he is also a phenomenally talented and accomplished artist. His work has been exhibited at the Brooklyn Museum of Art, Winkleman Gallery, and Saatchi Gallery among others. He currently works from his studio at STABLE, a new artist space in Northeast Washington, DC.

Andy’s upcoming solo exhibition, Overboard, at CulturalDC’s Mobile Art Gallery has been postponed due to the current Covid-19 pandemic. The exhibition is inspired by “The Great Shoe Spill of 1990.” In May 1990 five shipping containers holding 80,000 Nike sneakers went overboard in the North Pacific. The shoes eventually washed ashore littering the US northwest coastline. Andy’s newest sculptures are recreations of the iconic Jordan 5 sneaker, released by Nike in 1990. To bring attention to today’s culture of consumerism each shoe is sculpted from reclaimed materials taken from recycling bins. The shoe sculptures will be displayed in CulturalDC’s mobile shipping container art gallery. After the exhibit opens in DC it will then travel to the Brattleboro Museum and Art Center in Vermont.
